A Quiet Evening, a Good Book, and Hot Cocoa

A Quiet Evening, a Good Book, and Hot Cocoa

There is a particular kind of peace that arrives when the day begins to quiet. The light softens, the evening settles in, and, for a little while, there is nowhere else we need to be.

A book rests open in our hands. Beside it, a mug of hot cocoa sends up gentle curls of steam. We take a sip, turn a page, and let the small demands of the day loosen their hold.

Reading asks something different of us than the rest of the world does. Not to hurry. Not to keep up. Only to give our attention to one sentence, then the next. Somewhere between the words, our thoughts begin to settle.

And the cocoa? It is a small comfort, but a lovely one. Warm hands around a favorite mug. The familiar sweetness of chocolate. A pause at the end of a chapter to savor what we have read, and what we have poured.

Some evenings, we travel far inside a story. Other evenings, we read the same paragraph twice because we are tired. Both are perfectly good ways to spend the night. There is no required number of pages, no prize for reaching the end before bedtime.

At Mister Quill’s, this is the kind of evening we like to imagine: a comfortable chair, a story worth lingering over, and something warm within reach.

So tonight, let a few things wait. Find your bookmark. Make your cocoa just the way you like it. Read until you feel ready to close the book.

The day has asked enough of you. This little corner of the evening can simply be yours.
